Jung Bahadur Rana was the Prime Minister of Nepal in the later half of 18th century. When the Chinese government gifted him some tea saplings, tea found its way to the Ilam district. This was in the year 1863. Subsequently, the Ilam tea factory was set up in 1868 and continued functioning till 2010 when it was privatized. Tea production still continues in the district in other forms. The estate is situated at an altitude of approximately 4500-5000 feet above sea level. The hills of Darjeeling are physically connected to the estate areas. Hence, Darjeeling and Ilam enjoy the same topography, cold climate and stunning scenery.
