In the United States, iced tea accounts for roughly 85% of all the tea consumed. The refreshing drink is especially popular in the warmer southern states, where it is a very popular alternative to soft drinks.
The birth of Iced Tea
The first recorded appearance of iced tea in the U.S. was during the 1860s, when it was, for the most part, a novelty. However, it wasn’t until the 1870s that iced tea became a widespread favorite.
During this period, not only did recipes for iced tea begin appearing in print but hotels began offering it on their menus and railroad stations began selling it as well.
Iced tea’s popularity takes off
The major increase in iced tea’s popularity can be attributed to Richard Blechynden, who introduced it at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, it was unbearably hot that year at the fair. As the story goes, fair goers were passing up the hot tea that Blechynden, the Commissioner and Director of the East Indian Pavilion was selling.
So quick thinking Blechynden found a way to cool the tea, making it more refreshing and appealing to the hot and thirsty fair goers. Richard Blechynden may not have invented iced tea, but his chilled version was so popular that restaurants began scrambling to add the beverage to their menus so they could join in on the massive demand for the refreshing and inventive drink.
Potent iced tea
The early iced tea recipes had a lot in common with the pure alcohol infused Long Island Iced Tea, which doesn’t contain any tea at all, but rather a mixture of different alcohols which makes the drink taste like iced tea.
Iced tea’s popularity continues today
Today, iced tea is so popular that the beverage even has its own month! In the United States, June has become known as National Iced Tea Month. However, for some people, the whole summer, if not the whole year could be named after the delightful elixir.
Iced tea has had a long and robust history. Even though the recipes have changed dramatically throughout that history, one of the things about iced tea will always stay the same. Iced tea has remained one of the most refreshing and healthy beverages you can drink.
