Earl Grey tea, named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1830 to 1834, is steeped in mystery and legend. The blend's exact origins and reason for creation remain unclear. One popular legend suggests it was specially blended as a diplomatic gift, while another credits a Chinese mandarin tea master with its creation. According to the Grey family, bergamot was added to offset the lime flavor in the water on Earl GreyÕs estate, Howick Hall, near Newcastle, England. Lady Grey, Earl GreyÕs wife, loved the tea so much that it became her exclusive choice for entertaining and soon gained popularity in London society.

Received my Earl Grey tea leaves last week. Only loose-leaf was available then. Taste is a bit bitter and not very fragrant, with a slightly bitter finish . Different from the Earl Grey I’m used to. On the plus side, the aroma when you open the pack is excellent.

I tried an earl grey darjeeling in a sampler pack a couple years ago and I can't find it anywhere else on the site. The bergamot flavor complimented the muscatel profile and was well balanced, but this can easily became astringent.
