Tucked away in the fertile plains of Assam’s Tinsukia district, Chota Tingrai Tea Estate is more than just a tea garden—it’s a living legacy. Established in 1943 by Murleidhor Jalan, one of the first Indian entrepreneurs to own a tea estate in Upper Assam, Chota Tingrai has remained proudly family-run across four generations. Its journey mirrors the evolution of India’s tea landscape—from colonial-era plantations to independent, purpose-driven estates.

But what sets Chota Tingrai apart is its deep-rooted philosophy of care—towards people, the land, and the craft. The estate isn’t just home to tea bushes; it’s home to communities. With its own villages, schools, and healthcare facilities, it embodies a rare blend of tradition and responsibility. Many of the women who pluck the leaves belong to tea-working tribes, their skilled hands bringing nuance and character to every harvest.

Today, Chota Tingrai stands at the intersection of heritage and innovation. While vintage rollers from the 1940s hum softly in the orthodox factory, the estate also embraces modern green tea machinery and sustainable farming practices. Sadly not for me

I gave this tea multiple chances, as the price was good, and I had not had any offerings from this estate before. I tried different temperatures within the recommended range, on different days, weighed out the gram measurement to get accuracy, and try different cups with all of the additives suggested as well as just black which is my preference. It just didn't have the full bodied flavor advertised. It was a good quality tea and packed well, but the flavors just weren't there for me.
