Founded in 1856 by the enterprising Mr. J.E. Todd, Meleng tea estate is a cornerstone of Assam's tea history. Situated along the banks of the Meleng river, near the renowned Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Jorhat district of Upper Assam, the estate’s name pays homage to its distinctive location.

Meleng is celebrated as one of the oldest tea plantations in Assam, renowned for its extensive cultivation of both clonal and traditional Assamica tea varieties. The estate’s historical significance is highlighted by the P-126 clone, which traces its origins back to Meleng and remains a prominent variety in Assam’s tea industry, cultivated in a sprawling area of 20 hectares that has thrived for over a century.

Today, Meleng encompasses 1,340 hectares, with 840 hectares dedicated to tea cultivation. This venerable garden continues to honor its historical roots while embracing modern practices. As a pioneer in Assam’s tea industry, Meleng remains a vital source of exceptional teas, cherished for their rich flavors and storied heritage.

What a great addition to the Assam offerings at Teabox! A great depth of malty flavor. I added a bit of honey which was a nice compliment to it, but it's strong enough to hold up to using maple syrup as well. I ordered the sample size but will soon be ordering more!
