The Garden

Founded in 1856 by pioneer planter J.E. Todd, Meleng is one of Assam's oldest gardens, set near Jorhat's Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary along the river that gives it its name.

Home to the notable P126 clonal variety, a 20 hectare heritage section still thrives today across the estate's 1,340 hectares, balancing deep roots with modern craft.

Tasting Notes

From our Chief Tea Taster
Teabox chief tea taster
Aroma
Warm malt and golden raisin lead, with a subtle touch of honey.
Appearance
Dark amber
Taste
The cup opens with a rich, rounded malt character, accompanied by the deep sweetness of date palm and yellow raisins. The liquor feels smooth and full across the palate, with a lively briskness that brings freshness and definition. As it develops, gentle stone-fruit nuances emerge, adding a softer, fruitier dimension to the darker malt and dried-fruit notes. The second half of the cup moves towards soft cocoa, followed by delicate caramelized sweetness that lingers on the finish. A touch of astringency provides structure without taking away from the tea’s richness, leaving a clean, refreshing aftertaste. Layered, balanced, and deeply satisfying, this is a summer black with plenty of depth and character.

Satisfied with my first order

A pleasant woody, malty and sweet aroma followed by strong taste of Assam.
Pairs well with many sweet and/or buttery desserts.

I should also mention your satisfactory pricing policy this days and kind customer service during the busy sale period!

What a great addition...

What a great addition to the Assam offerings at Teabox! A great depth of malty flavor. I added a bit of honey which was a nice compliment to it, but it's strong enough to hold up to using maple syrup as well. I ordered the sample size but will soon be ordering more!
